If you are spending the weekend in south-west Mauritius, Saturday comes down to one choice: stay around the lagoon or cross the island for FESTIVAL 5128. Both can make a great day, but pretending the drive does not matter is how a relaxed weekend turns into a race. Here are two plans that genuinely fit 8–9 August 2026.

The one-off event this Saturday

FESTIVAL 5128 starts at 18:00 on 8 August at Anjalay Coopen Stadium in the north. More than twenty Mauritian artists are on the bill, moving from sega and sega tipik to reggae, seggae, live performances and DJ sets. Alain Ramanisum & Ravana Group, Laura Beg, The Prophecy, Sky To Be, Yansley and Les Zilwa are among the announced names. It is a rare chance to hear traditional rhythms and the current island scene on the same stage.

As of 7 August, presale tickets cost Rs800, children aged 0–11 enter free, and the organiser has marked the event “last tickets”. Outside food and drink are not allowed; refreshments will be sold inside. Check availability on the official event page.

The stadium is roughly 65 km by road from the KiteBelles base. A clear-road route is about 1 hour 10 minutes, but Saturday traffic and event access can add plenty of time. To arrive without watching the clock, leave Le Morne by 15:30. You will need a car or a pre-booked driver; relying on public transport after the concert is not a sensible plan.

Plan one: water in the morning, festival at night

Start the day in Le Morne. At KiteBelles, we look at the actual wind, tide and rider experience before confirming the session time. If you have never flown a kite, choose a discovery or private lesson. The instructor stays in touch by radio and rescue assistance is available on the water. In student feedback, the same useful points recur: calm explanations, attention to safety and progress without pressure.

Message the team with your level and mention that you are heading to the festival. If conditions cooperate, we will try to offer an earlier window. The lesson options are on the school page.

If the wind does not play along, or part of your group is staying on land, spend the morning at Le Morne Public Beach. The kite-lagoon side is windier and busier. Walk along the shore before choosing a sheltered swimming spot, and bring reef shoes if the entry is stony.

For lunch, Wapalapam is about 4.2 km from the school — five to ten minutes by car. It opens from 08:00 to 22:00. Recent diners most often recommend the seafood, fish cooked in banana leaf and curries; service can slow down when the restaurant is full. For the festival plan, book for 12:00–12:30 and allow at least ninety minutes.

Plan two: stay in the south-west

If an evening cross-island drive sounds like work, stay near Le Morne. A lesson or beach morning, a late lunch and an unhurried walk beside the lagoon already make a full day. This is the better option for families with young children, groups without a car, or anyone who would rather be on the water than checking the time.

For a straightforward meal right by the beach, Emba Filao is convenient. Come for shade, sea and an easy stop after the water rather than an elaborate dining experience. Reviews are mixed on speed and consistency, so Wapalapam remains the more predictable choice when timing matters.

Sunday: choose one route

Active option — Le Morne Brabant. Reach the official trailhead around 07:00–07:30. The lower section to the second viewpoint is 2.53 km and graded 1. The final 760 metres to the metal cross are graded 3: the terrain is steep, rockfall is possible and wet ground becomes slippery. A liability form is mandatory for the upper section, and the official trust recommends a qualified guide. Check the trail status with the Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund that morning. If access or weather is uncertain, stop at the lower viewpoints.

This is more than a summit photograph. Le Morne is tied to the history of resistance by maroons and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. The lagoon view matters, but so does understanding why the mountain matters to Mauritius.

Gentler option — Ebony Forest. The reserve is about 17.7 km from the school, normally a 25–30 minute drive. Arrive for 09:30. Routes take one to four hours and cover 2.3–6.1 km, with the walks graded easy. You can look for endemic birds and plants, join the guided Flycatcher raised walkway and support native-forest restoration through your entry fee. Current details are on the Ebony Forest website.

After a shorter walk, book Le Chamarel Restaurant for 12:30–13:00. Creole lunch is served from 12:00 to 15:00, with the south-west coast spread out below the terrace. Check hours and reserve through the restaurant website.

Check before you leave

  • FESTIVAL 5128 tickets and the live route to the stadium;
  • wind and lesson time with KiteBelles;
  • Le Morne trail status if you plan to hike;
  • your Wapalapam or Le Chamarel Restaurant booking.

Do not turn a late festival, a long drive and an early technical climb into one endurance test. Pick one main event for each day and let the rest of the weekend stay easy.
