ABOUT THE SPOT

The lagoon under Le Morne mountain is a huge field of flat, waist-deep water protected by the reef. This is where every Kitebelles lesson starts: body-dragging, waterstarts and the first long runs happen in a safe, sandy-bottom classroom.

Advanced riders use the same flat water for freestyle and foil sessions — the wind here is the steadiest in the bay, and you can always stand up and reset.

The wind here is side-onshore, the friendliest direction there is for learning: a lost board drifts back towards the beach rather than out to sea. Depth runs from half a metre to just over one, the bottom is sand, and it works right across the tide, though the depth in the teaching zone changes with it.

That is also why it is busy. Beginners walk in from the Kitebelles base and stay in the inside zone, downwind of the launch, while freestyle and foil riders use the wider flats further out. Leave room downwind of anyone still learning: that is where they are going, whether they mean to or not.
