ABOUT THE SPOT

Small Reef sits just beside One Eye and works on the same swell — at half the size and half the consequence. Clean faces, softer sections and a defined channel.

This is the graduation spot: prove your wave riding here before lining up at One Eye. Best around mid to high tide, when the reef has cover.

The season runs May to October, on the same south swell as One Eye, with the wind side-off on the face. The channel current is moderate rather than fierce, but it runs, and the ride out past the lagoon is long, so decide early whether you are committing or turning back.

Mid to high tide is the window. The reef sits one to two metres down and gets shallow at low water, which is the difference between a scraped fin and a session you remember for the wrong reason. Share the channel, stay upwind of the One Eye peak, and treat a first session here as a warm-up rather than a performance.
